Is Manuka Honey A Good H Pylori Treatment?
I’m often asked whether I recommend the use of Manuka Honey to work against Helicobacter pylori. The answer is “no”.
I’ve heard from a lot of people via email over the last four years in working with H pylori and I’ve also been involved with several health forums.
Unfortunately, in my experience, it’s actually quite rare to hear about success stories when people have used Manuka Honey alone as a treatment for H pylori.
Whilst Manuka Honey does seem to have some antimicrobial properties against H pylori we must always remember that honey is essentially sugar.
But many people who are infected by H pylori also suffer with yeast and fungal overgrowth. Yeast and fungal species include Candida, Geotrichum, Aspergillus & Rhodotorula, all of which we see frequently in our GI Effects Stool Testing.
Because Manuka Honey is just what it says on the tin (honey!) it is essentially sugar. So if yeast and fungal overgrowth is present, there’s a chance that it may be exacerbated by the use of Manuka Honey.
Additionally, studies have actually shown that when Triple Therapy treatment for H pylori, or when antacid medications such as Nexium, Prilosec, Pantoloc (generic names such as Esomeprazole, Lanzoprazole, Pantoprazole) alone are used, yeast and fungal organisms can proliferate in your stomach very rapidly, leading to overgrowth.
Therefore, it’s conceivable that you can encourage the overgrowth of Candida and other fungal organisms by feeding them with honey and allowing them to overgrow through the use of the meds!
This is extremely important because the yeast and fungal organisms can cause the same or similar symptoms as H pylori and it’s also one of the reasons why, even when H pylori is eradicated, symptoms can remain or even worsen.
Controlling “rebound” Candida overgrowth is important when considering treatment for H pylori. This is why I always run a Stomach Cleanse using Matula Herbal Formula, other herbs or probiotics.
All these strategies can help to control unwanted yeast and fungal overgrowth.
